James Madison, the "Father of the Consitution" of the U.S.

James Madison (1751-1836) fue el 4º presidente de los Estados Unidos. Pero, por encima de esto, pasa por ser uno de los más influyentes “Padres Fundadores” de aquel país, y se le considera “El Padre de la Constitución” norteamericana, una Constitución avanzadísima para su época y en la que medio mundo aún podría buscar un modelo.

El otro día me encontré con una cita de este gran hombre, una cita que me sorprendió profundamente por cuanto es un indicio de hasta qué punto los gobernantes y los grandes poderes económicos de este gran país han perdido los papeles y han TRAICIONADO los elevadísimos principios que sus fundadores establecieron con la esperanza de hacer un mundo más justo y pacífico.

James Madison decía esto un 20 de abril de 1795:

“De todos los enemigos de la libertad pública la guerra es, quizás, la que más terror debe provocar, porque lleva en sí y desarrolla el germen de todos los demás enemigos de la libertad. La guerra es el origen de los ejércitos, y de éstos devienen deudas e impuestos. Y es bien sabido que los ejércitos, las deudas y los impuestos son instrumentos que llevan a los muchos bajo el dominio de unos pocos. En la guerra, también, se amplía el poder discrecional del Ejecutivo. Su influencia a la hora de repartir cargos, honores y emolumentos se multiplica; y a todos los medios de seducción de las mentes se les añaden los del sometimiento de la fuerza del pueblo. El mismo aspecto maligno del republicanismo se puede rastrear en la desigualdad de las fortunas y en las oportunidades de fraude, que crecen libremente en un estado de guerra… y en la degeneración de los modales y de la moral que engendran ambas. Ninguna nación puede preservar su libertad en medio de continuas guerras.”

Imagino que más de una persona en el mundo hispano se sorprenderá, como yo me sorprendí, con palabras como las de James Madison, pues nos hemos acostumbrado a ver al gran gigante del norte como una potencia imperial que actúa sin contemplaciones con todo oponente más pequeño. Pero un estudio más profundo del pensamiento de los “Padres Fundadores” de los Estados Unidos nos demostraría a todos, incluidos los estadounidenses, que las clases dirigentes posteriores, el poder financiero y las grandes corporaciones norteamericanas traicionaron bien pronto a aquellos grandes hombres a los que tanto nombran y citan, y de los que tan orgullosos dicen sentirse.

Imagino que estos grandes hombres se habrán revuelto más de una vez en sus tumbas viendo lo que estaban haciendo sus sucesores con el magnífico legado que ellos les dejaron.

Resulta paradójico que, habiendo dicho Madison, el “Padre de la Constitución” de los Estados Unidos, “Ninguna nación puede preservar su libertad en medio de continuas guerras”, los sucesivos gobiernos de los Estados Unidos se hayan entregado a la práctica permanente de la guerra por todo el mundo, sin tomarse casi tiempos de respiro para mantener sus ejércitos quietos y en paz. Y así, poco a poco, el pueblo estadounidense está perdiendo su libertad, tal como vaticinaba James Madison.

¿Quién gobierna realmente los Estados Unidos? Es evidente que no sus presidentes, que son simplemente (consciente o inconscientemente) títeres electos en manos del inmenso poder financiero y empresarial (la maquinaria de guerra) de unos hombres que pretenden dominar todo el planeta, y a quienes Norman Mailer, en Los ejércitos de la noche, definió como, “los villanos de las sociedades anónimas que hoy destruían la promesa del presente con su fariseísmo y su codicia y su secreta apetencia (a menudo desconocida para ellos mismos) de cierta variante sexo-tecnológica de neofascismo”.

(A tenor de las palabras de Mailer, quizás podríamos comenzar a ver el neoliberalismo como un neofascismo de carácter económico que emplea para cumplir sus objetivos la dictadura del mercado, en la que los pueblos no tienen voz ni voto.)

Pero no todo el pueblo de los Estados Unidos está por este estado de cosas. Son muchos, muchísimos, los que reniegan de lo que están haciendo sus gobernantes y sus financieros. Si algo se le puede achacar a este gran sector de su población es que no se hagan oír más en su propio país.

Quizás va siendo hora de que vosotros, amigos norteamericanos que estáis por la justicia, por la paz, por la solidaridad y la sostenibilidad de nuestro planeta, comencéis a haceros visibles en las calles, como ya hicisteis en la década de los 60 y los 70, cuando conseguisteis detener aquella lacerante guerra de Vietnam, cuando pusisteis en su sitio a Nixon y a tanto desvergonzado como se atrevió a ponerse en los peldaños más altos de vuestro país.

Quizás va siendo hora de que le digáis alto y claro a vuestros representantes políticos y a vuestros empresarios y financieros que estáis hartos de no poder sentiros orgullosos de vuestra gran nación por causa de tanta injusticia y destrucción como ellos están sembrando en todo el mundo.

Y sabed que, desde todo el mundo, encontraréis el apoyo de cientos de miles, de millones de personas que pensamos como vosotros, que queremos también un mundo mejor, que queremos justicia, sostenibilidad, solidaridad y no-violencia, y que siempre hemos guardado la secreta esperanza de que el nuevo mundo que soñábamos quizás naciera a la sombra del obelisco del Monumento a Washington, o en las gradas del Lincoln Memorial…

¿No fue allí donde Martin Luther King nos habló de aquel sueño que todos visualizamos al escucharle a él?

“I have a dream.”

Todos tenemos ese sueño… y tendremos que luchar por él.

James Madison, the "Father of the Consitution" of the U.S.

James Madison (1751-1836) was the fourth president of the United States. But, beyond this, Madison was one of the most influential Founding Fathers of this country and is considered the “Father of the Constitution”, a most advanced Constitution, cutting-edge for its time, in which half of the world could still find a model.

Few days ago I found a quote from this great man, a quote which shocked me deeply because it is an indication of how far the rulers and the great economic powers of this great country have lost their roles and have betrayed the very high principles which its founders established in the hope of making a more just and peaceful world.

James Madison said an April 20^nd, 1795:

“Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes. And armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended. Its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force of the people. The same malignant aspect in republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war. . . and in the degeneracy of manners and morals, engendered by both. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.”

I imagine that more than one person in the Hispanic world will be surprised, as I was surprised, with words like these from James Madison, because we are accustomed to seeing the great giant of the north as an imperial power that acts ruthlessly with every smaller opponent. But a deeper study of the thought of the Founding Fathers of the United States would show us all, including Americans, that the subsequent ruling classes, financial powers and large American corporations soon betrayed those great men who they so much name and quote, and say they feel so proud.

I imagine that these great men have stirred more than once in their graves seeing what their successors were doing with the great legacy they left them.

Paradoxically, having said Madison, the “Father of the Constitution” of the United States, “No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare”, successive U.S. governments have devoted themselves to the continuing practice of war across the world, most times without taking breath to keep their armies quiet and peaceful. So, little by little, the American people are losing their freedom, as predicted James Madison.

Who really rules America? Obviously not their presidents, who are just (consciously or unconsciously) elected puppets in the hands of the immense financial and business power (war machine) of some men who seek to dominate the entire planet, and who Norman Mailer in The Armies of the Night, defined as “the villains of corporations who today were destroying the promise of present with their pharisaism and greed and secret craving (often unknown to themselves) for some sex-technological variant of neo-fascism”.

(According to Mailer’s words, perhaps we could start seeing neo-liberalism as an economic fascism that employs to achieve its objectives the dictatorship of the market, in which people have no voice or vote.)

But not all the people of the United States support this state of affairs. There are many, many, who renounce what their leaders and their financiers are doing. If something can be placed on this large segment of its population is that they didn’t make themselves heard more in their own country.

Perhaps it is time that you, American friends who are for justice, peace, solidarity and sustainability of our planet, put yourselves where you can be easily seen, in the streets, as you did in the 60′s and 70’s, when you stopped that excruciating war in Vietnam, when you put in place to Nixon and other shameless people who dared to step on the higher rungs of your country.

Perhaps it is time you tell loud and clear to your political representatives and your business and financial leaders that you are fed up with them; that you are tired of cannot be proud of your great nation because of so much injustice and destruction as they are spreading around the world.

And know that, from around the world, you will find the support of hundreds of thousands, millions of people who think like you, who also want a better world, who want justice, sustainability, solidarity and non-violence, who have always kept secretly the hope that the new world we dreamed may be born in the shadow of the obelisk of the Washington Monument, or on the steps of Lincoln Memorial…

Was not there where Martin Luther King spoke of that dream we all envision when listening to him?

“I have a dream.”

We all have that dream… and we will have to fight for it.
